"The Long Goodbye" is my favorite Raymond Chandler novel. The way he explores the loyalty Marlowe has to Terry Lennox is fascinating. In the film, where Elliott Gould plays Marlowe, the end is violent in a physical sense. I preferred the way Chandler did it in the book. A brutal end to the friendship, but in a non-physical way. Chandlers writing is wonderful, complex, precise and poignant. I discovered more in this
interesting link concerning Chandlers papers and drafts in the Bodleian library. The miracle of writing before the word processor!
